A dental cleaning can do more than make your pet’s breath smell fresh. It can save his or her life.

Dogs and cats can’t brush their teeth. But foul breath and yellow-brown teeth are not only unappealing, they could indicate serious condition called periodontal disease. And periodontal disease can lead to other health problems.

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums that is most commonly caused by the buildup of plaque and tartar in a pet’s mouth. This often painful infection can spread through the bloodstream to the heart, liver and kidneys leading to health problems that can shorten the life of your pet.

Without proper dental care, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age three. In fact, oral disease is the Number One health problem diagnosed in dogs and cats. The American Veterinary Dental Society recommends a three-step program to help prevent oral disease:

Step 1:

Visit your veterinarian regularly (yearly for younger pets and twice yearly for pets 7 and older)

Step 2:

Practice a home dental care routine that includes regular brushing and a nutritious diet, preferably dry food only

Step 3:

See your veterinarian for regular follow-up checkups
